2026年5月22~25日にドイツの都市ハノーファー市で毎年開催されている国際芸術祭「KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen」に音楽とテニスを使ったアートプロジェクト"Wild Conversation~Music Tennis~"で4日間出演しました。

最初の2日間はハノーファー市内の公園や大学構内で開催。
初日は、Faustwiese という市民の憩いの公園の牧草地で開催。通りがかりの人や、公園で過ごす人、テニスに興味のある子供達、ピクニックをしている若者が多く参加。2日目はWelfengartenというハノーファー大学Leibniz Universität Hannoverの大学と公園の間の広場で開催。公園で日光浴をする人、ダンサー、大学生、哲学者など幅広い人が参加。

残りの2日間は、ヘレンハウゼン芸術祭のメイン会場であるヘレンハウザー庭園内でKinderKunstSpektakel (子供も楽しめるプログラム)として開催。ドイツの芸術大学の学生や、フェスティバル参加者、沢山の子供たち、シニアの方々、芸術祭関係者など沢山の人たちとミュージックテニスを試みました。

今回は4分間のミュージックテニスセッションを行い、(2分間でチェンジコートをする)セッション後は録音していた自分達のミュージックテニスをヘッドホンで聴き、音楽やスポーツ、スポーツが抱える勝利至上主義やハラスメントについて語り合いました。また１ヶ月後には音楽アルバムとして4日間のセッションの様子を、Webサイトにアップロードしました。

スポーツは音楽です！このインタラクティブ・インスタレーションでは、ポップアップ式のテニスコートが設置され、動作センサーとスピーカーが組み込まれています。ここでは、テニスをプレーする来場者自身が即興演奏を行う音楽家となります。コート内での身体の動きに反応してスピーカーが作動し、さまざまな効果音やメロディの断片が鳴り響きます。こうして、ラリーのたびに新しい音楽作品がその場で生み出されます。本作の目的は、スポーツと音楽、パフォーマンスと身体活動を結びつけることで、演者と観客の境界を曖昧にすることです。プレイヤーたちが得点を競うのではなく、互いに音を紡ぐためにプレーするとき、このテニスコートからはどのようなメロディが生まれるのでしょうか。『Wild Conversation』で、日本の音楽家・林翔太郎は、テニスにおける意識を勝敗やポイント争いから、対話と共感を大切にするマインドフルなアプローチへと向けます。『Music Tennis』は、個人主義や競争至上主義的な価値観に対する彼の抵抗を表現した作品です。『Music Tennis』は、オープニング・ウィークエンドにはハノーファーの公共空間で偶然の出会いを生み出し、その後、子ども向けアートイベント「KinderKunstSpektakel」では、ヘレンハウゼン庭園を舞台に体験することができます。

From May 22 to 25, 2026, I presented *Wild Conversation ~ Music Tennis ~*, an art project that combines music and tennis, over four days at *KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen*, the annual international arts festival held in Hanover, Germany.

The first two days took place in public spaces around Hanover. On the opening day, the project was presented at Faustwiese, a grassy park where local residents gather to relax. Many passersby, people spending time in the park, children interested in tennis, and groups of young people having picnics took part in the experience. On the second day, the project was held at Welfengarten, an open square between Leibniz University Hannover and the adjacent public park. Participants included people sunbathing in the park, dancers, university students, philosophers, and many others from diverse backgrounds.

The remaining two days were held in the Herrenhausen Gardens, the main venue of the festival, as part of *KinderKunstSpektakel*, a program designed for children and families. We shared Music Tennis with art university students from Germany, festival visitors, many children, senior citizens, festival staff, and a wide range of other participants.

For this edition of the project, each Music Tennis session lasted four minutes, with players switching sides after two minutes. After each session, participants listened to a recording of their own Music Tennis performance through headphones and discussed music, sport, the win-at-all-costs mentality often associated with competitive sports, and issues such as harassment. One month later, recordings from the four-day project were released on the project's website as a music album.

Sport is music! For the interactive installation, a pop-up tennis court equipped with motion sensors and speakers will be set up. Here, the tennis-playing audience becomes improvising musicians. The movement of their bodies on the court activates the speakers, triggering various sound effects or melodic fragments. Thus, a new piece of music is created live with every rally.

The aim of this work is to combine sport and music, performance and physical exercise, blurring the lines between performers and audience. What melodies do the players coax from the tennis court when they play not against each other for points, but together for sounds? With Wild Conversation , the Japanese musician Syotaro Hayashi shifts the focus of tennis away from the competitive aspect of the game and towards a mindful approach centered on dialogue and empathy. This ~Music Tennis~ is an expression of his resistance to individualistic and competitive values.

While ~Music Tennis~ encounters chance meetings in public spaces in Hanover during the opening weekend, it can be played in the setting of the Herrenhausen Gardens during the Children's Art Spectacular.
