Wild Conversation~Music Tennis~ / YAU OPEN

date : 2024/12/4~22

"Wild Conversation~Music Tennis~ / YAU OPEN" is an art project that combines music and movement, held as an exhibition at the YAU CENTER in Yurakucho for about a month.

This project was selected as the third edition of the Yurakucho Art Urbanism YAU open call program and was realized as part of it.

With the concept of "A tournament where you create music through dialogue," the exhibition featured a series of events based on three key themes. During the exhibition, participants recorded the music rally they played, and on the final day of each event, the recordings were presented in an album format. Additionally, related activities such as "Music Tennis on the Go," performances, and collaborations with the Youth Solw Dance Room were also organized as part of the project, expanding the initiative into the local community.

The latest exhibition of Wild Conversation~Music Tennis~ maintained the characteristics of the previous works but focused specifically on the theme of "dialogue." The goal of this exhibition was to insert various forms of dialogue (such as talks, performances, and installations) and engage in conversations with participants of the work.

On days when the "Youth Slow Dance Room" hosted sessions, where youth generations offered advice to older generations, we held a session titled "Conversation," inviting guests to not only engage in a simple talk but to experience Music Tennis while conversing. Additionally, under the title "Music Tennis on the Go," we took the artwork to business exchange facilities in Otemachi and the entrances of office buildings, attempting to engage workers in Music Tennis as well.

In particular, through Music Tennis with workers in the Otemachi and Marunouchi areas, we were able to discuss issues such as harassment in club activities and power harassment in the workplace from a sports-centric, victory-driven, and athletic perspective (including non-sport club activities). This was an experience that gave a strong sense of the significance of the work.

For the exhibition at YAU CENTER, the exhibition period was divided into three weeks, each with its own theme. The first week focused on "Sports and Mental Health Open," which examined the issues inherent in a sports-oriented attitude and victory-driven culture, along with the accompanying mental health concerns. The second week was titled "Sports as Performance? Open," and explored the theatrical aspects of sports and the environment surrounding them. The third week, titled "Movement Open," considered the relationship between music, movement, and mobility, as well as the next potential places where this work could appear.

On the final day of the exhibition, a performance was also held. The music rally featured Yuga Omae, with guest performer Aoi Nogi and MC Sirafu, and they staged a Music Tennis match modeled after a three-set match, including an exhibition match.
